Soft Shackles and Lashing lines – Fad or Paradigm Shift?

Soft shackles have emerged as a game-changer in the world of sailing, offering significant advantages over traditional metal fixings. These innovative components, made primarily from Dyneema®, are lightweight, strong, and versatile, making them a popular choice among sailors.

Key Benefits of Lashing line

  • Lightweight and Strong: Dyneema® is renowned for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Compared to metal, it is significantly stronger while weighing considerably less. For example, a common Factor of Safety (FOS) on wire and metallic fittings is 2-2.5x the safe working load (i.e. the break load is 2.5x the SWL), whereas with soft attachments, factors of safety are normally >4x SWL. For equivalent SWL, Dyneema® will be between 50-75% lighter compared to metal fittings. This translates to substantial weight savings, leading to improved boat performance and higher safety factors.
  • Load Alignment: Lashing line is designed to self-align to the load angle, reducing stress on the line and preventing fatigue in the block. A metal fixing is designed to take a load at the correct angle. If, for whatever reason, there is not enough articulation to allow the fitting to align, then metal fatigue in the part can increase dramatically, which can lead to sudden and catastrophic failure.
  • Reduced Wear and Tear: A soft lashing line makes little noise, compared to metal on metal, and is much less likely to chip or wear through deck / mast laminate or sailcloth. This translates to a longer lifespan for your equipment and reduced maintenance costs.

Applications for Soft Shackles

  • Versatility: Soft shackles can be used in various rigging components, including halyards, sheets, and stays. They are also suitable for attaching blocks to toe rails or deck padeyes.
  • Easy to use: Soft shackles are simple to install and remove, making them convenient for sailors of all skill levels.
  • Rigging and hardware: Soft shackles can be used in various rigging components, such as halyards, sheets, and stays.
  • Replacement of metal fixings: If you're looking to upgrade your existing metal shackles, soft shackles offer a viable alternative in the majority of applications.
  • Weight reduction: For those seeking to reduce the overall weight of their boat, soft shackles can make a significant difference.

The Soft Shackle and Lashing Line ‘Mindset’

While soft shackle and lashing line offer significant advantages, they require a shift in mindset and careful attention to ensure their optimal performance.

Correct Attachment and Lashing Technique

The benefits of self-alignment and load-distribution associated with soft shackles and lashing lines depend heavily on proper installation techniques. It's essential to follow manufacturer guidelines meticulously to avoid compromising the strength and durability of these components.

Importance of Bend Radius

Maintaining a good bend radius is crucial for preserving the full break load of Dyneema® lines used in soft shackles and lashing lines. A general rule of thumb is to maintain a bend radius of at least 1:1 e.g. for 5mm Dyneema® a minimum bend radius of 5mm is required. However, this can vary depending on the specific application and the diameter of the line.

Regular Inspection and Maintenance

While Dyneema® lines are relatively low maintenance compared to metal, regular inspection is still essential to ensure the longevity and safety of soft shackles and lashing lines.

  • UV Exposure: Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can gradually degrade the strength of Dyneema® lines. Using double braids and washing regularly with fresh water can help mitigate this effect.
  • Saltwater Crystals: Saltwater crystals can act as abrasives within the lines, so regular washing is recommended to remove salt deposits.
  • Abrasion: While Dyneema® lines have excellent abrasion resistance, they can still be damaged if they rub against sharp edges or rough surfaces. Careful attention to contact points and regular inspections are crucial to identify and address any signs of wear.

Soft shackles and lashing lines - verdict

Soft shackles offer a compelling combination of strength, durability, and versatility. By embracing this innovative technology, sailors can enhance their boating experience while reducing the weight and complexity of their rigging. Soft connections are so versatile and, provided you have some spools of 2mm and 4mm single braid Dyneema® in your boat tool kit, you will be able to adapt and cope with most situations.
