Coinceurs

Rope Clutches are essential components for effective line handling on sailing yachts, allowing sailors to control and lock lines under load. They are particularly useful for halyards, reefing lines, and control lines, enabling them to be adjusted while maintaining tension. This prevents the need to tie off a line and makes operations much faster and safer.

Selecting the right rope clutch for your boat depends on several factors. The two most important considerations are rope diameter and Safe Working Load (SWL). A clutch must be correctly sized to grip the specific diameter of rope on your boat, as using an oversized or undersized clutch can lead to slippage or damage to the line. Most manufacturers provide clutches designed for specific ranges of rope diameters, such as 6mm to 12mm or 10mm to 14mm. It’s essential to choose a clutch compatible with the ropes you use onboard.

In addition to rope diameter, the clutch’s SWL should be sufficient for the loads placed on it during sailing. This ensures that the clutch won’t fail when tensioned lines are adjusted or locked in place. Spinlock, Antal, and Cousin are renowned brands offering high-performance clutches that are well-suited for a variety of boat sizes and applications. Their clutches are engineered for reliability, smooth operation, and long-lasting performance.

Rope Clutches vs. Rope Jammers

While rope clutches and rope jammers may appear similar, they have key differences in functionality and use. Rope clutches allow a line to be adjusted and released, under load, providing a controlled grip on the rope while still allowing adjustments when necessary. This makes them ideal for operations that require frequent tweaking, such as sail trimming and halyard adjustments.

On the other hand, rope jammers are designed for applications where the line is set and doesn’t need to be adjusted regularly. Jammers lock the rope more securely than clutches but don’t allow for tensioning adjustments while the line is loaded. They are more suitable for high static loads and on larger boats where safety requires the load to be taken up on a winch before release.

In addition to offering a wide range of rope clutches, we also provide spare parts and upgrade kits to help maintain or enhance the performance of your clutches. Regular maintenance is essential for keeping clutches in peak condition, especially in high-load or frequently used systems. Our service kits include essential components such as springs, pins, and cams, designed for annual replacement to ensure smooth operation and grip. For those looking to improve clutch performance, we also offer upgrade kits featuring advanced options like ceramic cams, which offer better grip and durability, and aluminium handles for increased strength and longevity. Keeping your clutches well-maintained ensures optimal performance, prolongs the life of your hardware, and reduces the risk of failure during crucial sailing maneuvers.
