Selden Masts and Spars

Selden manufactures masts for cruising, racing, and offshore sailing, using both aluminium and carbon fibre. Each mast is designed based on rig calculations that factor in boat dimensions, righting moments, and sail configurations.

Aluminium masts are made from 6000-series marine-grade extruded aluminium, ensuring strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. Mast profiles range from 232mm to 406mm in section height, with extrusion wall thickness varying from 2.75mm to 4.5mm, depending on the boat size and expected load.

Carbon fibre masts use a filament winding process to achieve the optimal strength-to-weight ratio. The carbon fibre sections offer twice the stiffness of equivalent aluminium masts while being up to 35% lighter. The reduction in mast weight lowers the yacht's centre of gravity, improving stability and sail performance.

Masts feature an internal conduit for halyards and wiring, reducing windage and drag. Luff groove dimensions accommodate various headsail attachment systems, including bolt rope and Tuff Luff foil profiles.

Selden Booms and Rodkickers

Selden booms come in aluminium and carbon, designed for traditional slab reefing, in-boom furling, and advanced single-line reefing systems.

Boom profiles range from 86mm to 380mm in height, with wall thickness between 2.0mm and 9.0mm. Aluminium booms are anodised for corrosion protection, while carbon booms provide increased stiffness with lower weight, reducing the momentum of gybing.

Selden’s Rodkicker rigid vangs improve mainsail control by providing support to the boom, eliminating the need for a topping lift. The Rodkicker range includes models with integrated gas springs for easy sail trimming, with load capacities from 500kg to 2000kg, depending on boom size and application.

Selden Furlex Jib Furling Systems

Selden Furlex system is a market leader in jib furling and reefing solutions. Available in manual, electric, and hydraulic models, Furlex ensures smooth furling and reliable performance in all wind conditions.

  • Furlex 50S to 404S (Manual): Designed for boats from 18ft to 50ft, these systems feature stainless steel ball bearings, a load-distributing halyard swivel, and extruded aluminium foils for reduced friction and smoother furling.
  • Furlex Electric (E-Series): Available in 12V and 24V configurations, the electric Furlex provides effortless sail handling with push-button control. The system uses a high-efficiency 48V motor with a worm gear drive, producing up to 90Nm of torque for reefing even in strong winds.
  • Furlex Hydraulic (H-Series): Designed for larger yachts, the hydraulic Furlex integrates directly into the yacht’s hydraulic system, offering maximum torque output with minimal manual effort. Hydraulic furlers accommodate forestays up to 16mm in diameter, with maximum forestay lengths exceeding 20m.

All Selden Furlex models feature a twin-groove extrusion for racing applications, allowing for quick headsail changes or twin headsail configurations for downwind sailing.

Selden Spinnaker and Gennaker Handling Systems

Selden offers advanced furling solutions for Code 0 sails and asymmetric spinnakers.

  • CX Code 0 Furler: Utilises a continuous line furling drum with an anti-torsion cable, allowing tight furling of the sail. Load ratings range from 5 to 20 tonnes, making it suitable for small cruisers to offshore racing yachts.
  • GX Top-Down Furler: Designed for asymmetric spinnakers, the GX system ensures smooth and controlled furling, even when the sail is partially deployed. It features sealed ball bearings, an automatic ratchet-locking drum, and a free-spinning halyard swivel.

Selden Deck Hardware

Selden manufactures a complete range of deck hardware, including blocks, cam cleats, deck organisers, and traveller systems.

  • Blocks: Available in plain bearing, ball bearing, and roller bearing configurations, Selden’s blocks are built for high-load applications. Stainless steel side plates and composite sheaves reduce friction, optimising sail control efficiency.
  • Deck Organisers: Enable efficient line management with multiple sheave configurations, handling up to 16mm lines under high loads.
  • Traveller Systems: High-load traveller cars use ball-bearing technology for smooth operation. These systems support mainsheet loads exceeding 5000kg, depending on yacht size.

Selden Hydraulic Systems

Selden’s hydraulic components enhance rigging efficiency by allowing precise control over sail settings.

  • Hydraulic Backstay Adjusters: These units provide up to 20 tonnes of tension adjustment, allowing racers and cruisers to fine-tune mast bend and forestay tension.
  • Hydraulic Boom Vangs: Designed for mainsail trimming, these vangs replace traditional mechanical vangs, offering push-button adjustment for optimal sail shape.
  • Hydraulic Furling Masts: Integrate with Selden’s powered furling system, enabling mainsail reefing at the touch of a button. Hydraulic furling masts are available for yachts up to 70ft.

Selden Winches

Selden winch range includes manual and electric models.

  • Manual Winches: Feature self-tailing functionality with multiple gear ratios for efficient operation. Drum sizes vary from 60mm to 250mm, with line capacities up to 16mm.
  • Electric Winches: Available in 12V, 24V, and 48V versions, electric winches integrate seamlessly with Selden’s furling systems, providing effortless sail handling. Gear ratios range from 2:1 to 4:1, with maximum pulling power up to 2000kg.

Selden Rigging Fittings and Accessories

Selden’s rigging components include spreader brackets, toggles, and terminals.

  • Rigging Screws: Made from chrome-bronze, these turnbuckles provide high corrosion resistance and precise adjustment.
  • Spreader Brackets: Designed for optimal shroud alignment, spreader brackets are available in cast stainless steel and carbon configurations.
  • Mast Step Systems: Include anodised aluminium platforms for easy mast base access, reducing wear on deck hardware.

Technical Innovations

Selden integrates cutting-edge technology into its product designs.

  • Filament Winding: Carbon fibre masts are manufactured using a computer-controlled filament winding process, ensuring uniform material distribution and superior strength-to-weight ratios.
  • Load-Distributing Bearings: Found in Furlex furlers, these patented components reduce friction and improve longevity.
  • Hydraulic Clew Outhaul: Enables precise mainsail trimming with minimal effort, replacing manual outhaul winches.
