Established in 1848, the company initially focused on spinning and braiding cotton and hemp before expanding into synthetic fibers by the 1950s. Cousin Constrictor

The Cousin Constrictor textile clutch is an innovative rope clutch system widely used in high-performance sailing. Unlike traditional metal clutches, it uses a lightweight, high-strength Technora® fiber sleeve to grip the line with a unique non-aggressive friction locking mechanism. This mechanism works similarly to a "Chinese finger trap," meaning that the more tension applied to the line, the tighter the grip, providing increased holding power under higher loads. The Cousin Constrictor is praised for being three times lighter and having twice the breaking strength of conventional clutches, making it ideal for both racing and cruising yachts.

One of the key advantages of the Cousin Constrictor clutch is its non-abrasive design, which helps to preserve the rope’s integrity and extends its lifespan, making it compatible with most marine ropes (except those with Dyneema® or Spectra® covers). The clutch includes a Dyneema® release line for easy operation, which can be remotely activated for efficient handling. The clutch is available in different sizes, ranging from sizes suitable for 6 mm ropes up to 14 mm, and each version can be installed in standard deck mounting slots to replace existing clutches without additional modifications.

This clutch has become popular among ocean racers, especially in applications where weight reduction and reliability are paramount. Sailors have noted its smooth performance in high-load scenarios, such as halyard locking, and ease of release under load, a critical feature for spinnaker halyards and other high-tension lines..
