Soft shackles

Soft shackles are a popular alternative to traditional metal shackles. They are made from single braid polyurethane-coated Dyneema® SK75 or SK78, offering several advantages over their metal counterparts. Soft shackles offer a remarkable 70-80% weight reduction. Made with a diamond stopper knot on one end and spliced eye on the other, they assure robust connections without the hassle of corrosion. From securing halyards to attaching blocks swiftly, these connectors excel in various applications. Despite their soft nature, these shackles are engineered to provide high strength and durability. They are easy to remove, even under heavy loads. Read more...

Their excellent abrasion resistance and self-aligning nature reduce wear and tear on mast, rigging, deck, and sails. Compared to the metal shackles Dyneema® is waterproof and floats if dropped in the water. Soft shackles are considered safer, especially in situations where they are used frequently. Their soft structure reduces the risk of injury and damage to the boat, equipment and sometimes crew. Single-line or twin-line configurations are available. While personal preference plays a role, our recommendation leans toward the twin-line version for its ease of use and optimal load distribution. The soft shackles reduce noise and wear, which contributes to a quieter and more comfortable sailing experience.

What size of soft shackles do I need?

When choosing the size of soft shackles match the working load of another known element in the system (fitting, block or rope SWL). Then, double check the diameter, ensuring it securely fits around the intended attachment point without introducing unnecessary slack, considering the thickness of the line or attachment. Factor in the length based on the specific application, striking a balance between a secure connection and avoiding excess bulk.

Are soft shackles stronger than metal ones?

Yes, soft shackles can be as strong, if not stronger, than their metal counterparts. Despite their lightweight and flexible design, soft shackles are made from high-strength materials, such as Dyneema®. These synthetic fibres boast an impressive strength-to-weight ratio, providing comparable or even superior strength when compared to traditional metal shackles. Additionally, soft shackles are designed to evenly distribute loads, reducing stress points and enhancing overall durability.

What are the advantages of the twin line or double shackles?

The twin-line or double soft shackles offer a distinct advantage. While both single and twin-line versions share the same high-strength properties, the twin-line configuration provides enhanced ease of use, better alignment and optimal load distribution. The design, featuring two individual lines, makes these shackles slightly easier to open and close. Moreover, in applications where blocks are involved, the twin-line configuration allows for more comfortable movement, ensuring a more even load distribution.

What maintenance soft shackles require and how often do I need to replace them?

Soft shackles require minimal maintenance - these waterproof and corrosion-resistant Dyneema® shackles provide worry-free performance. Regular inspections and an annual visual check ensure longevity. Replace any shackles showing signs of wear or fluffing, with a general replacement recommended every 3-5 years based on usage.
