A dogbone, is a short structural rod that can be attached to the end of a rope and used to establish a connection with another rope, an eyelet, or a deck fitting. The conical middle and symmetrical ends make the piece look like a bone, hence the name dogbone. It was originally made from a wooden peg and has been around since the days of tall ships. Over the years, this device has fallen out of use but has recently been revived thanks to better materials and a renewed appreciation for its versatility. The dogbone is a very practical way to attach downhauls, connect soft loops used to attach blocks to deck hardware, and many other rigging applications.
