Shock cord, also known as bungee cord, is a critical component in sailing gear, providing elasticity and shock absorption for various applications on yachts. This versatile cordage is available in two main versions: one with a standard polyester cover and another with a Dyneema® cover, offering exceptional abrasion resistance and performance advantages.
The primary function of shock cord on sailing yachts is to absorb shock and maintain tension. This makes it ideal for securing sails, holding gear in place, and creating adjustable rigging systems. The elastic properties of shock cord allow it to stretch under load and return to its original length once the load is released, which is invaluable in various “take-up” systems, which keep working areas clean and tidy.
The Dyneema®-covered shock cord stands out for its superior abrasion resistance compared to traditional polyester-covered options. Dyneema® is a high-performance synthetic fiber known for its exceptional strength and durability. When used as a cover material for shock cord, Dyneema® enhances the cord's longevity and reliability. Plus its superior abrasion resistance ensures that the cord maintains its integrity over time, reducing the risk of wear and tear and the need for frequent replacements.
Additionally, Dyneema® cover provides a lightweight solution without compromising strength, contributing to overall weight reduction on the yacht. This weight-saving benefit is especially advantageous in performance sailing, where every ounce counts in optimizing speed and agility.
In summary, shock cord is a versatile and essential component for sailing yachts, offering elasticity and shock absorption for various onboard applications. The Dyneema®-covered variant stands out for its exceptional abrasion resistance and durability, making it an ideal choice for demanding sailing conditions. Explore the benefits of Dyneema®-covered shock cord to enhance the performance and longevity of your sailing gear.
What diameter shock cord do I need
- There are no hard and fast rules to specifying shock cord
- Most applications on sail boats from 20-50ft will be covered with 4mm-6mm
- Very lightweight dinghy systems might use 3mm or 3mm can be used as a type of flexible lashing material if shock absorption is the objective
- 8mm – 10mm is fairly heavy duty and would normally be used on larger boats +60f
