Drum locks

Drum locks, used for locking the furling line automatically when furled. There is a strong debate about whether drum locks are a good or a bad thing. They are designed to prevent an accidental unfurl part way through the manouvre. They are NOT designed to hold the furled sail in place for prolonged periods - a cleat on the furling line should be used. And at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference. Some manufacturers do not have any drum lock option. And most manufacturers sell furling drums with or without drum lock. So you need to be careful when buying a drum – you should ask your self the question: Do I want a drum lock, and then make sure you purchase the correct drum version. Read more...

It is only in the last 5 years that drum locks have become common place on new units. Therefore, on current models, some manufacturers provide retrofit kits. Many drums <= 5-7 year’s old can be retrofitted with a drum lock, but you should double check before you buy.
